The guideline has been condensed into two papers, the first detailing definitions, classification, diagnosis, imaging, pathology, and management of special situations [EIMs, pregnancy, cancer surveillance, surgery, and ileo-anal pouch disorders of UC]; and the second describing current therapeutic management [treatment of active disease and maintenance of medically induced remission].

UC is a lifelong disease arising from an interaction between genetic and environmental factors, observed predominantly in developed countries. Its precise aetiology is unknown, and therefore curative medical therapy is not yet available. Within Europe there is an east-west and north-south gradient, but the incidence appears to have increased in southern and eastern countries during recent years.18–20
