Mouth Cancer Action Month

November is Mouth Cancer Action Month. Mouth cancer can affect the lips, cheeks, throat and tongue, and can affect anyone. Mouth cancers are most prevalent in people over the age of 40 (men in particular). 7.000 patients were diagnosed with mouth cancer last year in the UK alone (an increase of more than a third compared to 10 years ago) and women and younger patients are being diagnosed more frequently.

Signs of mouth cancer include painless mouth ulcers, white or red patches, unusual lumps and swellings. Tobacco and alcohol are linked to most cases of mouth cancer, with chewing tobacco, betel quid, gutkha and paan considered particular risks.

Mouth Cancer Action Month organisers, the Oral Health Foundation, are encouraging the message that:

• It is important to see a dentist regularly (even if dentures are worn)
• When brushing your teeth, look for signs of change
• Use a suitable SPF sun cream to protect lips
• Adhere to a healthy diet rich in vitamins A, C and E
• Limit smoking and alcohol consumption
