World Mental Health Day 2017 provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide. This year's theme set by the World Federation for Mental Health is mental health in the workplace.

Approximately 25% of people will experience a mental or neurological health issue during their lives. Mental Health complications if left untreated, can often lead to debilitating conditions and impact victims and their families as seriously as many physical diseases.

Two-thirds of people with known mental disorders will never seek professional help. WHO (World Health Organisation) state that “thousands of people with mental health conditions around the
world… are not only discriminated against, stigmatised and marginalised but are also subject to emotional and physical abuse in both mental health facilities and the community.”

Organisations such as Mind and WHO are endeavouring to correct this out-dated and backwards view, and encourage the progression of research into this virtually untouched area of medicine. Now is the time to act, and start a conversation with those around you. Lets make talking about mental health the norm.
