The focus of 2017’s World Arthritis Day is the importance of recognising the signs early enough to reduce the risk of further damage. The ‘Don’t Delay, Connect Today’ campaign encourages everyone to be aware of the symptoms of RMDs (rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases) such as joint swelling, pain and tenderness, joint deformity, stiffness, inflexibility and even depression and anxiety.

According to worldarthritisday.org, RMDs affect a quarter of people in the European Union, and are the biggest cause of sick leave and premature retirement worldwide.

Occurring just two days after World Mental Health Day, World Arthritis Day places a strong emphasis on the fact that the prevalence of clinical anxiety and depression in those with RMDs is roughly double that of the general population.

You can get involved with this worthy cause by:

  • Reading up on RMDs symptoms
  • Organising local campaign activities
  • Supporting social media activities surrounding the awareness day
