NICE recommends Esmya (ulipristal acetate) to treat menstrual bleeding and uterine fibroids.- Gedeon Richter
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has published guidelines recommending Esmya (ulipristal acetate), a blocker of progesterone, from Gedeon Richter to treat menstrual bleeding and uterine fibroids 3 cm. or more in diameter. Since surgical treatment is expensive, the four course drug is seen as a welcome cheaper alternative for the common condition of uterine fibroids.
Comment: Around 40 in every 100 women develop uterine fibroids at some time in their life, and it is estimated that about 300,000 surgical procedures are performed annually in the EU for fibroids, including around 230,000 hysterectomies.
