Greatbatch has received approval from the FDA for its Algovita Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) System to treat chronic intractable pain of the trunk and/or limbs. The Algovita SCS system received CE Mark last year, and is currently in limited release in Europe.

The Algovita SCS System consists of a stimulator (implanted pulse generator) which contains a rechargeable battery and the electronics that produce stimulation. This is connected via insulated wires that carry stimulation to the spinal cord from the charging System, which monitors the stimulator battery charge levels. The system is controlled by a hand-held programmer device that is used to adjust the stimulation and monitor the stimulator battery charge levels.
