Sorin Group announced the launch of REPLY CRT-P, its new cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemaker, for heart failure patients. The Reply CRT-P is 11.3 cm3 in volume is claimed to be the smallest cardiac resynchronization pacemaker in the world. It features algorithms aimed at better supporting heart failure management and ultimately improving patient outcome. For example, the Sleep Apnoea Monitoring (SAM) algorithm detects severe sleep apnoea using a highly reliable sensor that measures ventilation. The index reported by the device has been validated against polysomnography, the gold standard method used to diagnose sleep apnoea, yielding a specificity of 85% and a sensitivity of 89%.

Data from HF population studies suggest that both obstructive sleep apnoea and central sleep apnoea may be present in 30% to 50% of HF patients. If left untreated, sleep apnoea increases the risk of death and HF hospitalisation. SAM can screen these patients for severe sleep apnoea so that they can be treated. In addition, it can be used to monitor the long term progression of the disease.

Comment: According to analysts at Research and Markets, the cardiac resynchronization therapy device market is expected to reach a value of US$455 million by 2016. China accounts for nearly 25% of the market share and India claims more than 23%. Among the product types, cardiac resynchronization therapy Defibrillators (CRT-D) account for nearly half of the market value while cardiac resynchronisation pacemakers (CRT-P) provide the remaining half.
