Guidelines on the use of multicolour flow cytometry in the diagnosis of haematological neoplasms - British Society for Haematology (BSH)


Flow cytometry is an invaluable but complex technique in the diagnosis of haematological disorders, especially in lymphomas and leukaemias. Significant technical advances enable simultaneous analysis of several antigens (multicolour flow cytometry MFC) and modern cytometers can analyse more cells in a shorter space of time. Technical considerations are: specification and settings of instrumentation; the selection of antigens and fluorochromes, choice of antibodies/antibody cocktails; specimen processing and storage; and data acquisition and analysis. Morphological assessment in conjunction with flow cytometry is recommended. Laboratory staff must have the appropriate training and competency assessments.
