Radioiodine thyroid therapy is indicated in adults and children for: • Hyperthyroidism: Treatment of Graves' disease, toxic multinodular goitre or autonomous nodules. • Treatment of papillary and follicular thyroid carcinoma including metastatic disease. Sodium iodide ( 131 I) therapy is often combined with surgical intervention and with antithyroid medicinal products.
This medicinal product is for diagnostic use only. 1. Sodium [ 131 I]iodide may be given as a “tracer” dose to study radioiodine kinetics. An estimation of the thyroid uptake and effective half life obtained with a tracer dose can be used to calculate the activity required for radioiodine therapy. 2. In the management of thyroid carcinoma, sodium [ 131 I]iodide is used to identify thyroid remnants and metastases (after ablation). 3. Thyroid scanning for benign conditions with sodium [ 131 I]iodide can be performed but only where circumstances do not allow for radiopharmaceuticals with more favourable dosimetry to be used.
This medicinal product is for diagnostic use only. Sodium Iodide ( 123 I) Injection is used as a diagnostic agent in the functional or morphological study of the thyroid gland by means of: • Scintigraphy • radioactive iodine uptake test The 24 hours uptake data are generally used in calculating the therapeutic dose.
Potassium iodide is indicated as a thyroid-blocking agent to prevent the uptake of radioactive iodine, for example after a nuclear accident or during a nuclear medicine investigation before administering a radioiodinated compound, which is metabolised to iodide or which contains radioiodine impurities.
For use in the pre-operative management of hyperthyroidism.
As an antiseptic for use on minor wounds, cuts and abrasions.
