Dr Christian Vestergaard graduated from Aarhus University in 1998, after which he started his studies in atopic dermatitis and inflammation as a Monbusho Scholar at the University of Tokyo, Japan, in the laboratory of Professor Kouji Matsushima.
Dr Vestergaard completed the studies as part of his PhD in the dermatological research laboratory at the Department of Dermatology, Aarhus University Hospital.
After achieving his PhD he was awarded a two year post-doctoral position from the Danish National Research Council, which lead to the completion of the Danish Doctoral thesis with a focus on inflammation.
Dr Vestergaard’s research still has focus on the inflammatory reaction in the skin and its influence on skin-barrier function, but also on the epidemiology of co-morbidities in atopic dermatitis. Dr Vestergaard’s research group also focuses on bullous pemphigoid, mastocytosis, and skin changes of malnutrition.
Dr Vestergaard achieved his board certification in Dermatology after training at the Departments of Dermatology in Aarhus and Odense. He is now an Associate Professor at the Department of Dermatology Aarhus University and National Director of Training in Dermatology in Denmark. Dr. Vestergaard has been the daily leader of the urticaria clinic for the last 6 years, and been an active teacher at the eczema school for atopic dermatitis patients and their parents in Aarhus.
He serves as member of the Board for The Danish Association of Allergology and the European Task Force on Atopic Dermatitis (ETFAD). Currently he is member of the Editorial Board for the Annals of Dermatology, and the Journal of The European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology (JEADV), and has been appointed to join the International Editorial Board of The Journal of Dermatology from 2016.
