Goals of Treatment

Following a confirmed diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), effective management should be based on individualised assessment of disease in order to reduce current symptoms and future risk (Figure 1).1

Goals of treatment for stable COPD.

Patients should receive advice on healthy living, including diet and physical exercise. Furthermore, identification and reduction of exposure to risk factors, particularly smoking and other air pollutants, are important in the treatment and prevention of COPD.1

The major treatment expectations of patients are greater symptomatic relief and mobility, faster symptomatic relief, and improvement in morning activities.2
