Clinical Evaluation

Clinical evaluation of a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia should include (Eichhorst et al., 2015; Oscier et al., 2012):

  • Family history of lymphoid malignancy.
  • Physical examination including palpation of lymph nodes, spleen and liver to determine presence and size of possible lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly and hepatomegaly.
  • Determination of the performance status (using the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group [ECOG] score) and fitness (comorbidities)/functional activity of the patient (e.g. using the cumulative illness rating scale [CIRS] score).
  • Determination of the clinical stage to prognosticate likely outcomes and inform treatment choices.
