Releasing patients from the chains of C. difficile infection

Dr Duncan Wyncoll, a Consultant in Critical Care at Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Hospital Trust in London, UK, welcomed the huge audience to Brussels and to the Astellas sponsored symposium entitled “Releasing patients from the chains of C. difficile infection”. Using a case study based on a 73 year old woman, with known Crohn’s disease, who developed diarrhoea accompanied with abdominal pain, Dr Wyncoll demonstrated the difficulties in diagnosing and treating a patient with C. difficile..

‘How do you choose the most appropriate antifungal agent for your critically ill patient?’ This was a question posed to the audience by Dr George Dimopoulos, from the Attikon University Hospital in Athens, Greece. Using an algorithm he had developed, Dr Dimopoulos started the symposium by talking about how he chooses the most appropriate antifungal agent for his critically ill patients. He explained that factors such as the type of guidelines he is using, the local epidemiology.....





Fungal infections

This session was held in a packed-out hall, with standing room only. Moderators for this session were Dr Stephen Opal from Providence, USA and Professor Antoni Torres from Barcelona, Spain. This session was designed to talk about the problems clinicians are facing in their ICU wards with regards to fungal infections. It focused on the use of biomarkers and new diagnostic algorithms which may help with diagnosis of fungal infections in the long-term. It also concentrated on assessing the response to therapies and the different types of antifungal strategies and when they should be used. Finally it looked at the newer antifungal agents, the echinocandins and whether they differ in terms of efficacy, safety and pharmacokinetic (PK)....
