Treatment options

It is important that patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) are treated as soon as a full diagnosis has been made; several studies have shown that patients who receive effective symptomatic treatment earlier in the course of their disease fare significantly better clinically than patients who delay their treatment[20-22] (Figure 2).

The symptoms of patients with PD and their response to treatment may vary considerably; therefore, recommendations regarding the nature and sequence of therapy for PD should always be tailored to the specific needs and circumstance of the individual patient.

The current treatment options for PD focus on symptomatic relief by reversing the imbalance of dopamine and acetylcholine in the brain that results from the death of the dopaminergic neurons.

Currently, there is a lot of attention surrounding the work on neuroprotective properties of PD medications in both the laboratory and clinical settings. However, there is no conclusive evidence of the neuroprotective properties of currently available PD therapies.[20]
