Assessing Parkinson's disease severity

The severity of Parkinson's disease (PD) can be assessed using a number of rating scales, assessing patients' motor function, activities of daily living (ADL), mental status, dependency and complications of therapy (click here for more information).

One of the most commonly used is the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), which is widely used to assess efficacy of treatment in clinical trials. The UPDRS has six parts for rating different aspects of PD:

UPDRS parts II (ADL) and III (motor) are widely used as efficacy endpoints in clinical trials.
