| Drug description : | Capsules: 15 mg yellow/red capsules marked BMS 1964 and 15; 20 mg brown capsules marked BMS 1965 and 20; 30 mg light orange/ dark orange capsules marked BMS 1966 and 30; 40 mg dark orange capsules marked BMS 1967 and 40. Solution: powder for oral solution. |
| Presentation : | Capsules, stavudine 15 mg , 20 mg , 30 mg , 40 mg . Oral solution, stavudine 1mg/mL. |
| Indications : | Antiviral combination treatment of HIV-1 infected patients. |
| Adult Dosage : | Doses to be taken 1 hour before meals, or if not possible taken with a light meal. Under 60 kg, initially 30 mg twice daily; over daily. |
| Child Dosage : | Under 3 months, not recommended. Adolescents, children and infants over 3 months, under 30 kg, initially 1 mg/kg twice daily; over 30 kg, same as adult dose. |
| Contra Indications : | Hypersensitivity to stavudine or any of the excipients. Lactation. |
| Special Precautions : | Renal impairment, history of peripheral neuropathy (monitor carefully), pancreatitis, raised liver enzymes, hepatitis, liver dysfunction (dicontinue if liver disease worsens), lactic acidosis, lactose intolerance. Elderly. Pregnancy. |
| Interactions : | Zidovudine. Potential to interact with trimethoprim and other actively secreted drugs. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Peripheral neuropathy, pancreatitis, headache, chills/ fever, malaise, diarrhoea, constipation, dyspepsia, asthenia, anorexia, nausea/ vomiting, pneumonia, pain, myalgia, arthralgia, insomnia, depression, anxiety, flu syndrome, sweating, dizziness, allergic reaction, rash, pruritus, benign skin neoplasms, lymphadenopathy, and neoplasms. Raised ALT, AST levels, lactic acidosis. |
