| Generic Name : | Co-codamol 30/500 - codeine phosphate, paracetamol |
| Drug description : | Caplets (tablets) or capsules. |
| Presentation : | Zapain Caplets: paracetamol 500mg, codeine phosphate 30mg. Zapain Capsules: paracetamol 500mg, codeine phosphate 30mg. |
| Indications : | Relief of severe pain. |
| Adult Dosage : | Usual dose, one or two caplets or capsules every four hours as required. Maximum daily dose, 8 caplets or capsules. |
| Child Dosage : | Under 12 years, not recommended. |
| Contra Indications : | Hypersensitivity to either paracetamol or codeine, or any of the excipients of Zapain caplets or capsules. Children under 12 years of age. Moderate to severe renal or hepatic impairment. Contraindicated in patients for whom opiate medications should not be used, such as patients with acute asthma, obstructive airways disease, respiratory depression, acute alcoholism, head injuries, raised head injuries, raised intracranial pressure, after biliary surgery, patients suffering from diarrhoea of any cause, within 14 days of MAOIs. |
| Special Precautions : | Increased intracranial pressure, acute abdominal conditions, elderly, debilitated, impaired renal or heaptic function (contraindicated if severe), hypothyroidism, Addison's disease, prostatic hypertrophy, urethral stricture. Pregnancy and lactation. |
| Interactions : | Antihypertensives (including diuretics), quinine, quinidine, CNS depressants, MAOIs, tricyclic antidepressants, anticholinergics, anti-diarrhoeal agents, metoclopramide, domperidone, colestyramine, mexiletine, cimetidine. Anticoagulant effect of warfarin may be increased by prolonged regular use of paracetamol (occasional doses, no significant effect). |
| Adverse Reactions : | Most commonly, nausea, vomiting, light headedness, dizziness, sedation, shortness of breath, constipation. Also, miosis, visual disturbances, headache, bradycardia, respiratory depression, difficult micturition, urinary retention, allergic reaction. Euphoria, dysphoria, constipation, abdominal pain and pruritus may occur. |
