| Drug description : | Zarontin Capsules: clear pale yellow oblong soft gelatin capsules. Zarontin Syrup: pale yellow syrup (dye-free formulation). |
| Presentation : | Zarontin Capsules: Ethosuximide 250mg. Zarontin Syrup: Ethosuximide 250mg per 5mL. |
| Indications : | Primarily useful in absence seizures. When generalised tonic clonic seizures (grand mal) and other forms of epilepsy co-exist with absence seizures, Zarontin may be administered in combination with other antiepileptic drugs. |
| Adult Dosage : | 500 mg daily increasing as necessary by 250 mg daily at intervals of 4 - 7 days up to 2 g daily. |
| Child Dosage : | Under 6 years, initially 250 mg daily adjusted by small increments to optimum response - optimal dose for most children is 20mg/kg/day; 6 - 12 years, same as adult. |
| Contra Indications : | Hypersensitivity to succinimides. |
| Special Precautions : | Pregnancy, lactation. Hepatic or renal impairment. Withdraw gradually. |
| Interactions : | Other anti-epileptic drugs. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Gastric and CNS disturbances. Skin rashes, blood dyscrasias, SLE. |
