| Drug description : | 250 microgram, white oval scored tablets marked UPJOHN 29; 500 microgram, pink oval scored tablets marked UPJOHN 55. |
| Presentation : | Tablets, alprazolam 250 microgram , 500 microgram . Xanax is not prescribable on the NHS. |
| Indications : | Short-term treatment of moderate to severe anxiety and anxiety accompanying depression. |
| Adult Dosage : | Elderly, 250 microgram two or three times daily; others, 250 - 500 microgram three times daily; maximum 3 mg daily. |
| Child Dosage : | Not recommended. |
| Contra Indications : | Acute pulmonary insufficiency. Sensitivity to benzodiazepines. Lactation. |
| Special Precautions : | Chronic pulmonary insufficiency, chronic renal or hepatic disease. The elderly. Judgement and dexterity may be impaired, patients should be warned of these effects. Do not use alone to treat depression or anxiety associated with depression. In cases of bereavement, psychological adjustment may be impaired. Avoid long-term use; withdraw gradually. Pregnancy. |
| Interactions : | Alcohol and other CNS depressants. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Drowsiness, light-headedness, muscle weakness, ataxia, confusion, vertigo, GI upset, hypotension, visual disturbances, skin rashes, impaired alertness changes in libido. Rarely blood disorders and jaundice. Abnormal psychological reactions, Risk of dependence increases the higher the dose and the longer the treatment. |
