Drug class description :  Cephalosporins.
Generic Name :  Cefradine [cephradine]
Drug description :  Velosef Capsules: orange/blue capsules coded SQUIBB 113. 500 mg blue capsules coded SQUIBB 114. Velosef Syrup: powder for suspension. Velosef Injection: powder in vials.
Presentation :  Velosef Capsules: Cefradine (cephradine) 250 mg . Velosef Syrup: Cefradine (cephradine) 250 mg per 5 mL. Velosef Injection: Cefradine (cephradine) 500 mg , 1 g .
Indications :  Treatment of infections of urinary and respiratory tracts and of the skin and soft tissues. These include: upper respiratory infections (pharyngitis, sinusitis, otitis media, tonsillitis, laryngo-tracheo bronchitis); lower respiratory infections (acute and chronic bronchitis, lobar and bronchopneumonia); urinary tract infections (cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis); skin and soft tissue infections (abscess, cellulitis, furunculosis, impetigo). Prophylaxis in surgery. Velosef Injection: also indicated for septicaemia and endocarditis. The following organisms have shown in vitro sensitivity to cefradine: Gram-positive (Staphylococci [both penicillin- sensitive and resistant strains], Streptococci, Streptococcus pyogenes (beta haemolytic) and Streptococcus pneumoniae); Gram- negative (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Proteus mirabilis, Haemophilus influenzae, Shigella species, Salmonella species and Neisseria species.
Adult Dosage :  Velosef Capsules and Velosef Syrup: 1 - 2 g daily in 2 or 4 divided doses; maximum 4 g daily. Velosef Injection: 2 - 4 g by intramuscularly or intravenous injection or intravenous infusion daily in divided doses.
Child Dosage :  Velosef Capsules and Velosef Syrup: 25 - 50 mg/kg daily in 2 or 4 divided doses. Otitis media, 75 - 100 mg/kg daily in divided doses; maximum 4 g daily. Continue in all cases for 48 - 72 hours after patient is asymptomatic. Velosef Injection: 50 - 100 mg/kg daily in divided doses.
Contra Indications :  Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions :  Hypersensitivity to penicillins. Renal impairment. Pregnancy, lactation.
Adverse Reactions :  Hypersensitivity reactions. GI disturbances. Rarely, pain at inj. site, candidosis, eosinophilia, neutropenia, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, rise in liver enzymes and blood urea. Positive Coomb's test.
