| Drug class description : | Broad-spectrum penicillins (antipseudomonal penicillins) / beta-lactamase inhibitors. |
| Generic Name : | Piperacillin with tazobactam |
| Drug description : | White to off-white lyophilised powder in glass vials. |
| Presentation : | Powder for injection, piperacillin (as sodium) with tazobactam (as sodium) 2.25 g (2 g: 250 mg); 4.5 g (4 g: 500 mg). |
| Indications : | Treatment of the following systemic and/or local bacterial infections in which susceptible organisms have been detected or are suspected: lower respiratory tract infections, complicated and uncomplicated urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, skin and skin structure infections, bacterial septicaemia. Also indicated for polymicrobic infections including those where aerobic and anaerobic organisms are suspected (intra- abdominal, skin and skin structure, lower respiratory structure, lower respiratory tract). Tazocin, in combination with an aminoglycoside, is indicated for bacterial infections in neutropenic adults or children. Refer to Summary of Product Characteristics. |
| Adult Dosage : | 4.5 g by slow intravenous injection or infusion eight hourly. |
| Child Dosage : | Children without neutropenia: Not recommended. Children with neutropenia: Over 50kg body weight, follow adult dosing schedule; under 50kg, 90mg/kg (80mg piperacillin, 10mg tazobactam) every 6 hours in combination with an aminoglycoside. |
| Contra Indications : | History of allergic reactions to any of the penicillins and/or cephalosporins or beta-lactamase inhibitors. |
| Special Precautions : | Renal failure. Patients with low K+ reserves. Pregnancy, lactation. |
| Interactions : | Probenecid, drugs affecting blood coagulation and/or thrombocyte function, non-depolarising muscle relaxants, methotrexate. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Skin reactions, GI disturbances, allergic reactions, superinfection, hyperkalaemia. Rarely leucopenia, interstitial nephritis, renal failure, haemolytic anaemia, hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice, pseudomembranous colitis (discontinue immediately). |
