| Drug description : | Tagamet Tablets: 200 mg green f-c tablets, 400 mg green oblong f-c tablets. Both marked with TAGAMET, SK&F and tablet strength. 800 mg green oval f-c tablets marked SK&F and T800. Tagamet Syrup: syrup. Tagamet Injection: ampoules. Tagamet Effervescent: white effervescent tablets. |
| Presentation : | Tagamet Tablets: Cimetidine 200mg , 400mg , 800mg . Tagamet Syrup: Cimetidine 200mg per 5mL. Tagamet Injection: Cimetidine 200mg per 2mL. Tagamet Effervescent: Cimetidine 400mg. |
| Indications : | Duodenal and benign gastric ulceration, including that due to NSAIDs. Recurrent and stomal ulceration. Oesophageal reflux, persistent dyspepsia, other conditions requiring a reduction of gastric acid. |
| Adult Dosage : | Duodenal ulcer, 800 mg at bedtime or 400 mg twice daily for min. four weeks; maintenance, 400 mg at bedtime or twice daily. Other indications, see data sheet. |
| Child Dosage : | Over 1 year, 25 - 30 mg/kg daily in divided doses. |
| Special Precautions : | Exclude malignant disease before and during treatment. Impaired renal function. Monitor patients on long term therapy. Pregnancy, lactation. |
| Interactions : | Oral anticoagulants, phenytoin, theophylline, intravenous lignocaine. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Diarrhoea, dizziness, rash, tiredness. Gynaecomastia, occasional reversible liver damage, confusion. Very rarely interstitial nephritis, acute pancreatitis, thrombocytopenia, headache, myalgia, arthralgia. |
