Medicine information : TEGRETOL (psychoses)
 
Drug class description :  Dibenzazepines.
Generic Name :  Carbamazepine - manic-depressive psychosis
Drug description :  Tegretol Tablets: 100mg, 200mg white scored tablets marked with name and strength; 400mg white scored oblong tablet marked company and tablet name. Tegretol Retard: 200mg controlled-release orange scored oblong tablet marked CG and HC; 400mg controlled-release brown scored oblong tablet marked CG and ENE. Tegretol Liquid: sugar-free liquid. Tegretol Chewtabs: 100mg, 200mg pale orange square chewable tablets marked with T, and tablet name and strength.
Presentation :  Tegretol Tablets: Carbamazepine 100mg , 200mg , 400mg . Tegretol Retard: Carbamazepine 200mg , 400mg . Tegretol Liquid: Carbamazepine 100mg/5mL . Tegretol Chewtabs: Carbamazepine 100mg , 200mg .
Indications :  Prophylaxis of manic-depressive psychosis unresponsive to lithium. Initially 400mg daily in divided doses increasing gradually until symptoms controlled. Max 1.6g daily in divided doses. Usual range 400-600mg daily in divided doses.
Contra Indications :  Hypersensitivity to carbamazepine or tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). A-V conduction abnormalities. History of bone marrow depression or porphyria.
Special Precautions :  Cardiac, hepatic or renal disease, glaucoma, previous psychosis. Perform blood counts, liver function tests, urinalysis and BUN determinations before and regularly during treatment. Pregnancy, lactation.
Interactions :  Oral anticoagulants, MAOIs, combined oral contraceptives, macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), inhibitors or inducers of CYP450 3A4, azole antifungals, terfenadine, loratadine, clozapine, St John's Wort, nicotinamide, digoxin, fluvoxamine, doxycycline, isoniazid, cimetidine, dextropropoxyphene, calcium antagonists, viloxazine, steroids, cyclosporin, felodipine, tricyclic antidepressants (eg, imipramine), acetazolamide, thioridazine, frusemide (furosemide), hydrochlorothiazide, non- depolarising muscle relaxants, anticonvulsants, lithium, benzodiazepines, methadone, theophylline, danazol, haloperidol, fluoxetine, alcohol.
Adverse Reactions :  Dizziness, ataxia, drowsiness, GI upset. Allergic skin reactions. Blood dyscrasias, oedema, hyponatraemia. Rarely, jaundice, hepatitis, multi-organ hypersensitivity disorder, cardiac conduction disturbances, toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
