Medicine information : TENORMIN (hypertension)
 
Drug class description :  Cardioselective b-blockers (beta- blockers).
Generic Name :  Atenolol - hypertension
Drug description :  Tenormin: white f-c tablets marked TENORMIN 25 and S; 100 mg orange f-c tablets marked TENORMIN and S. Tenormin Syrup: lemon-lime, sugar-free syrup. Tenormin LS: orange f-c scored tablets marked TENORMIN LS and S.
Presentation :  Tenormin Tablets: Atenolol 25 mg , 100mg . Tenormin LS: Atenolol 50 mg . Tenormin Syrup: Atenolol 25 mg/ 5 mL .
Indications :  Hypertension.
Adult Dosage :  50 - 100 mg daily. Reduce in elderly and impaired renal function.
Child Dosage :  Not recommended.
Contra Indications :  2nd or 3rd degree AV block, sinus bradycardia, sick sinus syndrome, severe peripheral arterial disease, uncompensated cardiac failure, cardiogenic shock, hypotension, right ventricular failure secondary to pulmonary hypertension, significant cardiomegaly, untreated phaechromocytoma. Metabolic acidosis. Known hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions :  Poor cardiac reserve should be controlled with digitalis and block. History of bronchospasm (cardio-selective b-blockers usually have a lesser effect on airways resistance than the non- selective type but their use should also be avoided in patients with wheezing or obstructive airways disease unless there are compelling clinical reasons). Diabetes. Asthenic symptoms. Cerebrovascular insufficiency. Renal or hepatic impairment, thyrotoxicosis. General anaesthesia; consider withdrawal before elective surgery. Pregnancy, lactation. Withdraw gradually. Prinzmetal's angina and first degree heart block, less severe peripheral arterial disease, ischaemic heart disease.
Interactions :  Clonidine withdrawal, verapamil, diltiazem, class I antiarrhythmics, class II calcium antagonists, cardiac depressant anaesthetics, hypoglycaemics, reserpine, other antihypertensives, CNS depressants, sympathomimetics, indometacin (indomethacin), ibuprofen.
Adverse Reactions :  Cold extremities, sleep disturbances, bradycardia, exertional tiredness, bronchospasm, heart failure deterioration, postural hypotension, GI upset. If unexplained dry eyes or skin rash occur withdraw gradually. Precipitation of heart block, intermittent claudication, Raynaud's phenomenon, confusion, dizziness, headache, mood changes, nightmares, psychoses and hallucinations, hepatic toxicity, purpura, thrombocytopenia, exacerbations of psoriasis, psoriaform skin reactions, visual disturbances.
