Medicine information : SALOFALK
 
Drug class description :  Salicylates.
Generic Name :  Mesalazine
Drug description :  Salofalk Tablets: yellow oval e-c tablets Salofalk Enema: enema. Salofalk Suppositories: suppositories.
Presentation :  Salofalk Tablets: Mesalazine 250mg. Salofalk Enema: Mesalazine 2g per 59mL. Salofalk Suppositories: Mesalazine 500mg.
Indications :  Salofalk Tablets and Salofalk Enema: Mild to moderate acute exacerbations of ulcerative colitis. Maintenance of remission. Salofalk Suppositories: Mild to moderate attacks of ulcerative colitis.
Adult Dosage :  Salofalk Tablets and Salofalk Enema: Acute disease, 6 daily in three divided doses; maintenance, 3 - 6 daily in divided doses. 1 rectally at night. Salofalk Suppositories: 1 - 2 suppositories two or three times daily.
Child Dosage :  Not recommended.
Contra Indications :  Hypersensitivity to salicylates, severe renal and hepatic disease, active peptic ulcer, blood clotting abnormalities. Renal impairment. Pregnancy. Advise patients to report any unexplained bleeding, bruising, sore throat or malaise; perform blood test if suspect blood dyscrasia.
Interactions :  Sulphonylureas, coumarin, methotrexate, probenicid, sulfinpyrazone (sulphinpyrazone), spironolactone, frusemide (furosemide), rifampicin, glucocorticoids.
Adverse Reactions :  Hypersensitivity reactions, increased metahaemoglobin levels, blood dyscrasias, headache, GI disturbances, hair loss.
