| Presentation : | Salazopyrin Tablets: Sulfasalazine 500mg. Salazopyrin EN-Tablets: Sulfasalazine 500mg. Salazopyrin Suspension: Sulfasalazine 250mg/5mL. Salazopyrin Enema: Sulfasalazine 3g. Salazopyrin Suppositories: Sulfasalazine 500mg. |
| Indications : | Salazopyrin Tablets, Salazopyrin EN-Tablets, Salazopyrin Suspension: Ulcerative colitis. Crohn's disease. Salazopyrin Suppositories and Salazopyrin Enema: Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's colitis of the rectum. |
| Adult Dosage : | Salazopyrin Tablets, Salazopyrin EN-Tablets, Salazopyrin Suspension: 2 - 4 tablets or 20 - 40 mL four times daily; maintenance, 4 tablets or 40 mL daily in divided doses. Salazopyrin Enema: 1 at bedtime. Salazopyrin Suppositories: 2 morning and night after defaecation. Adjunct to oral therapy: In severe generalised disease affecting the rectum/ rectosigmoid, and in cases slow or two suppositories may be given morning and evening in addition. |
| Child Dosage : | Salazopyrin Tablets, Salazopyrin EN-Tablets: Under 2 years, not recommended; over 2 years, 40 - 60 mg/kg bodyweight. daily; maintenance, 20 - 30 mg/kg bodyweight daily. Salazopyrin Suspension: under 2 years, not recommended; over 2 years, 0.8 - 1.2mL/kg bodyweight daily; maintenance, 0.4 - 0.6mL/ kg bodyweight daily. Salazopyrin Enema: Not recommended. Salazopyrin Suppositories: Under 2 years, not recommended; over 2 years, in proportion to dosage for 70 kg adult. |
| Special Precautions : | Perform regular blood checks and liver and kidney function tests. Renal or hepatic impairment, allergy, glucose-6-PD deficiency, porphyria. Advise patients to report any unexplained bleeding, bruising, sore throat or malaise; perform blood test if suspect blood dyscrasia. |
| Interactions : | Digoxin, folate. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Nausea, headache, rash, fever, loss of appetite. Blood dyscrasias, hypersensitivity, GI, CNS and renal reactions. Oligospermia. |
