Drug class description :  Selective b2 -agonists (beta- agonists, beta-adrenoceptor stimulants).
Generic Name :  Generic The Committee on Safety of Medicines has advised that b - agonist treatment may result in 2 potentially serious hypokalaemia. Plasma potassium concentrations should be monitored in severe asthma; in severe asthma the risk of hypokalaemia may be
Presentation :  Aerosol inhalation, salbutamol 100 micrograms per metered inhalation. Available from APS, Ashbourne (MaxiventR ), Co-Pharma, Cox, Generics UK, Hillcross, Kent, Lagap, Norton. Nebules, 2.5mg/2.5mL , 5mg/2.5mL . Available from Galen (Steripoules R ), Generics UK. Syrup, sugar-free, salbutamol 2mg /5mL. Available from Hillcross, Lagap. Tablets, salbutamol 2mg , 4mg . Available from APS, Cox, Hillcross. Hillcross.
Indications :  Management of asthma, bronchospasm, reversible airways obstruction.
Adult Dosage :  Aerosol inhalation: 100-200 micrograms (one or two puffs); may use up to three or four times daily if required. Prophylaxis in exercise-induced bronchospasm, 200 micrograms (two puffs). Nebules: 2.5 - 5 mg up to four times daily via nebuliser. Syrup: 5 - 20 mL three or four times daily. Tablets: 4mg 3 - 4 times daily; maximum single dose, 8mg.
Child Dosage :  Aerosol inhalation: 100 micrograms (one puff) increased to two puffs if necessary. Prophylaxis in exercise-induced brochospasm, 100 micrograms (one puff). Nebules: 2.5 - 5 mg up to four times daily via nebuliser. recommended; 2 - 6 years, 2.5 - 5 mL; 6 - 12 years, 5 mL; over 12 years, 5 - 10 mL. All three or four times daily. Tablets: under 2 years, 100 micrograms/kg 4 times daily; 2 - 6 years, 1 - 2mg 3 - 4 times daily; 6 - 12 years, 2mg 3 - 4 times daily.
Elderly Dosage :  Tablets, initially 2mg 3 - 4 times daily.
Special Precautions :  Hyperthyroidism. Pregnancy and lactation. Arrhythmias, susceptibility to prolonged QT interval, hypertension.
Interactions :  b-blockers.
Adverse Reactions :  Paradoxical bronchospasm, fine tremor, tachycardia, headache, peripheral vasodilatation, palpitations. Rarely, muscle cramps. Hypersensitivity reactions reported. Hypokalaemia after high doses.
