| Drug class description : | Reflux suppressants. |
| Generic Name : | Calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, sodium alginate |
| Drug description : | Oral suspension. |
| Presentation : | Suspension, calcium carbonate 1200mg, magnesium carbonate 140mg, sodium alginate 300mg per 10mL dose. |
| Indications : | Symptomatic treatment of complaints resulting from gastro- oesophageal reflux and hyperacidity, such as regurgitation and heartburn. |
| Adult Dosage : | 10mL to be taken one hour after meals and before going to bed. In the case of heartburn between doses, an extra dose of 10mL can be taken. Maximum eight unit doses in 24 hours. |
| Child Dosage : | Under 12 years, not recommended. |
| Contra Indications : | Severe renal insufficiency, hypercalcaemia and pre-existing hypophosphataemia. Nephrolithiasis associated with calcium-containing stones. calcium-containing stones. Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients. |
| Special Precautions : | Avoid prolonged use. If the symptoms persist or abate only partially, further medical examination is required. As with other antacids, RennieR Duo can mask the symptoms of a gastric malignancy. Impaired renal function - monitor plasma calcium and magnesium levels. Long-term use at high doses can result in hypercalcaemia, magnesaemia and milk-alkali syndrome, especially in patients with renal insufficiency. Prolonged use possibly enhances the risk for the development of renal calculi. 10 mL of suspension contain 120 mg of sodium which should be considered for patients on a restricted sodium diet. |
| Interactions : | Antibiotics (such as tetracyclines and quinolones), phosphates. Because of possible changes in the rates of absorption on concurrently administered medicines, it is recommended that antacids should not be taken concurrently with these medicines, but 1 to 2 hours later. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Hypermagnesaemia or hypercalcaemia and alkalosis, especially in patients with impaired renal function, after prolonged use of high does. |
