| Presentation : | Injection, papaveretum 7.7mg/mL , 15.4mg/mL . |
| Indications : | Pre- operative medication. Enhancement of anaesthetics during operations. Relief of postoperative pain. Relief of severe chronic pain. |
| Adult Dosage : | 7.7 - 15.4mg as a single dose. The dose is not usually repeated more often than 4 hourly. For pre-operative medication the route is subcutaneous or intramuscular. For all other indications the intravenous route may also be used. |
| Child Dosage : | Under 1 month, 115 micrograms per kg body weight; 1 month to 1 year, 154 micrograms per kg body weight; 1 to 5 years, 1.93 - 3.85 weight; 1 to 5 years, 1.93 - 3.85 mg maximum single dose; 6 to 12 years, 3.85mg to 7.7 mg maximum single dose. |
| Elderly Dosage : | The initial dose should not exceed 7.7mg. |
| Contra Indications : | Coma, respiratory depression or obstructive airways disease. Hypersensitivity to opium alkaloids. Within two weeks of administration of MAOIs. |
| Special Precautions : | Administration during labour. Hypothyroidism, head injury, renal and chronic hepatic disease, raised intracranial pressure, biliary tract disease, prostatic hypertrophy, adrenocortical insufficiency. Elderly. Patients exhibiting acute alcoholism, raised intracranial pressure or convulsive disorders. Respiratory insufficiency. Pregnancy, lactation. |
| Interactions : | MAOIs, CNS depressants, phenothiazines, alcohol. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Respiratory depression, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, urinary retention and constipation. Tolerance and dependence may occur with repeated administration. |
