| Drug description : | Pancrease Capsules: white capsule marked 0095 with e-c beads. Pancrease HL: white/red capsule marked HL with e-c beads. |
| Presentation : | Pancrease Capsules: Pancreatin equivalent to 5,000 B.P. units lipase activity, 2,900 B.P. units amylase activity, 330 B.P. units protease activity. Pancrease HL: Pancreatin equivalent to 25,000 B.P. units lipase activity, 22,500 B.P. units amylase activity, 1,250 B.P. units protease activity. |
| Indications : | Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency as in cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, post pancreatectomy, post gastrointestinal bypass surgery and ductal obstruction from neoplasm. |
| Adult Dosage : | 1 or 2 during each meal and 1 with snacks. A third capsule with meals may be taken if required; maximum 10,000 units/kg lipase daily. |
| Child Dosage : | 1 or 2 during each meal and 1 with snacks. A third capsule with meals may be taken if required; maximum 10,000 units/kg lipase daily. Pancrease HL is not recommended for cystic fibrosis in children under 15 years. |
| Contra Indications : | Hypersensitivity to pork. Pregnancy. |
| Special Precautions : | Maintain adequate hydration. Review patients who develop unusual abdominal symptoms, especially if taking >10, 000 units of lipase/kg daily, to exclude possibility of colonic damage. |
| Interactions : | Food with pH >7.5. |
| Adverse Reactions : | fibrosing colonopathy. Abdominal discomfort, nausea, skin reactions, stricture of the ileo- caecum and large bowel, colitis. Hyperuricosuria, hyperuricaemia with very high doses. |
