Drug details for : PEPCID
 
Drug class description :  H2 -antagonists (H2 -receptor antagonists / H 2 -blockers).
Generic Name :  Famotidine
Drug description :  20mg: beige square tablet; 40 mg: brown square tablet. Both marked with tablet name and strength.
Presentation :  Tablets, famotidine 20mg , 40mg .
Indications :  Duodenal and benign gastric ulcers. Prevention of relapse of duodenal ulceration. Zollinger- Ellison syndrome. Prevention and treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.
Adult Dosage :  Benign gastric and duodenal ulcer, 40 mg at night for four to eight weeks. Prophylaxis of duodenal ulcer relapse, 20 mg at night. initially, 20 mg every six hours, adjust as necessary; maximum 800 mg daily. Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, 20 mg twice daily for six to 12 weeks; if also erosion or ulceration, 40 mg twice daily for six to 12 weeks. Prophylaxis 20 mg twice daily.
Child Dosage :  Not recommended.
Contra Indications :  Hypersensitivity to any component. History of hypersensitivity to other H - receptor antagonists. 2
Special Precautions :  Impaired renal function, gastric carcinoma. Pregnancy, lactation.
Adverse Reactions :  Headache, dizziness, CNS disturbances, dry mouth, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, rash, GI discomfort, anorexia, fatigue, arthralgia, muscle cramps, liver enzyme abnormalities. Rarely, reversible gynaecomastia, toxic epidermal necrolysis.
