| Drug description : | Powder in vial plus solvent. |
| Presentation : | Injection, peginterferon alpha-2b 50 micrograms , 100 micrograms , 120 micrograms , 150 micrograms per 0.5mL. |
| Indications : | As monotherapy for chronic hepatitis C in patients positive for HCV antibodies, with elevated ALT levels and intolerance or contraindication to tribavirin. |
| Adult Dosage : | 0.5 to 1 microgram/kg by subcutaneous injection once weekly for minimum six months. Continue for an additional six months in patients showing a loss of HCV-RNA at six months. |
| Child Dosage : | Under 18 years, not recommended. |
| Contra Indications : | Severe renal or hepatic dysfunction, epilepsy, CNS dysfunction, autoimmune dysfunction, autoimmune hepatitis, thyroid disease, severe psychiatric disorders. Pregnancy, lactation. |
| Special Precautions : | Debilitating medical conditions, coagulation disorders, psoriasis, myelosuppression. Monitor patients with congestive heart failure, MI arrhythmias, ocular effects. Maintain adequate hydration. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Fever, fatigue, headache, myalgia, rigors, anorexia, nausea, depression, insomnia, alopecia, flu-like symptoms, inflammation at injections site. Discontinue if acute hypersensitivity, prolongation of coagulation markers, pulmonary infiltrates or severe CNS effects occur. |
