| Presentation : | Injection, magnesium sulphate 50 per cent (approximately 2 mmol Mg2+/mL), Available from Medeva. |
| Indications : | Renagel is indicated for the control of hyperphosphataemia in adult patients on haemodialysis. Renagel should be used within the context of a multiple therapeutic approach, which could include calcium supplements, 1,25 – dihydroxy Vitamin D3 or one of its analogues to control the development of renal bone disease. |
| Adult Dosage : | Hypomagnesaemia, up to 160 mmol Mg2+ over up to five days may be required to correct the deficiency. May be administered by intravenous infusion or by intramuscular injection. Maintenance dose, where required, 10-20 mmol Mg2+ daily. Arrythmias, 8 mmol Mg2+ by intravenous infusion over 10 to 15 minutes. May repeat dose once if required. Eclampsia, regimens vary between hospitals. Local guidelines should be consulted. Note: Regarding the role of magnesium therapy in the reduction of mortality following suspected myocardial infarction: local policy should be adhered to. |
| Contra Indications : | Heart block, myocardial damage, renal failure (creatine clearance renal failure (creatine clearance <20ml per minute). |
| Special Precautions : | Monitor serum levels of magnesium regularly, particularly in patients with impaired renal function and in children. Respiratory disease. Pregnancy. |
| Interactions : | Intravenous calcium. CNS depressant drugs. Digoxin. Neuromuscular blocking agents. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Circulatory collapse, depression of reflexes, flushing, transient hypotension, hypothermia, hypotonia and bradycardia. |
