Drug class description :  Dopaminergics (dopamine precursor) / dopa decarboxylase inhibitors.
Generic Name :  Levodopa, benserazide
Drug description :  Madopar Capsules: '62.5' blue/ grey capsules; '125' blue/pink capsules; '250' blue/caramel capsules. All capsules marked ROCHE. Madopar Dispersible: white scored tablets marked with strength and ROCHE. Madopar CR: green/blue controlled-release capsules controlled-release capsules marked ROCHE.
Presentation :  Madopar Capsules: '62.5', levodopa 50mg, benserazide (as hydrochloride) 12.5mg. '125', levodopa 100mg, benserazide (as hydrochloride) 25mg. '250', levodopa 200mg, benserazide (as hydrochloride) 50mg. Madopar Dispersible: '62.5', levodopa 50mg, benserazide (as hydrochloride) 12.5mg. '125', levodopa 100mg, benserazide (as hydrochloride) 25mg. Madopar CR: Levodopa 100mg, benserazide (as hydrochloride) 25mg.
Indications :  Kemadrin is indicated for the treatment and symptomatic relief of all forms of Parkinson's disease e.g. idiopathic (paralysis agitans), postencephalitic and arteriosclerotic disease. Kemadrin is also indicated for the control of extrapyramidal symptoms induced by neuroleptic drugs including pseudo-parkinsonism, acute dystonic reactions and akathisia.
Adult Dosage :  Madopar Capsules: Under 25 years, not recommended; over 25 years, patients not receiving levodopa, initially 1 x '62.5' three or four times daily after meals increasing by 1 x '125' daily once or twice weekly. Usual maintenance, 4 - 8 x '125' daily in divided doses. See data sheet. Madopar CR: Under 25 years, not recommended; over 25 years, patients not receiving levodopa: initially 1 three times daily with meals, titrated according to individual requirements; see data sheet. Child Dosage :  Not recommended.
Elderly Dosage :  Madopar Capsules: Initially 1 x '62.5' once or twice daily increasing by 1 x '62.5' every third or fourth day.
Contra Indications :  Severe psychoses, narrow angle glaucoma, history of malignant melanoma. Pregnancy. Lactation.
Special Precautions :  Cardiovascular, hepatic, renal, pulmonary or endocrine disease. Peptic ulceration. Psychiatric disturbances. Wide angle glaucoma. Osteomalacia. Monitor blood values and hepatic, renal and cardiovascular function. Withdraw 12 - 48 hours before elective surgery.
Interactions :  Drugs affecting central amines. MAOIs, antihypertensives and sympathomimetics, ferrous sulphate. Antacids with Madopar CR.
Adverse Reactions :  Nausea, vomiting, anorexia. Postural hypotension. Involuntary movements. Cardiac and CNS disturbances. Urine discolouration. Haemolytic anaemia (rare).
