| Generic Name : | Rizatriptan |
| Drug description : | Maxalt: 5 mg pink capsule-shaped tablet marked MSD and 266; 10 mg pink capsule-shaped tablet marked MAXALT and MSD 267. Maxalt Melt: 10 mg white, round, peppermint flavoured oral lyophilisate embossed with rounded square. |
| Presentation : | Maxalt: tablets, rizatriptan (as benzoate salt) 5mg , 10mg . Maxalt Melt: wafers, 10mg . |
| Indications : | Acute treatment of headache phase of migraine with or without aura. |
| Adult Dosage : | 10 mg swallowed whole with liquid or water dissolved on the tongue. Repeat if necessary after at least two hours. Maximum two doses in 24 hours. |
| Child Dosage : | Under 18 years, not recommended. |
| Contra Indications : | Hypersensitivity to rizatriptan or any of the ingredients. Concurrent administration of MAOIs or use within two weeks of discontinuation of MAOI. Severe hepatic or severe renal insufficiency. Previous CVA or TIA. Moderately severe or severe hypertension, or untreated mild hypertension. Established coronary artery disease, including ischaemic heart disease (angina pectoris, history of myocardial infarction, or documented silent ischaemia), signs and symptoms of ischaemic heart disease, or Prinzmetal's angina. Peripheral vascular disease. Concomitant use of rizatriptan and ergotamine, ergot derivatives (including methysergide), or other 5-HT receptor agonists. 1B/1D |
| Special Precautions : | Elderly. Moderate/mild renal or hepatic insufficiency, Phenylketonuria with Maxalt Melt (contains aspartame). Pregnancy, lactation. Evaluate coronary artery disease (CAD) and ischaemic heart disease (IHD). Maxalt should not be given to patients with established CAD. |
| Interactions : | MAOIs, ergotamine, ergot derivatives, other 5HT receptor agonists, propranalol, drugs 1 acting as cytochrome P450 CYP2D6 substrates, beta-blockers. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Dizziness, somnolence, asthenia, abdominal or chest pain, palpitations, tachycardia, GI CNS disturbances, pharyngeal discomfort, dyspnoea, skin reactions, blurred vision, hot flushes, tongue swelling, rash, dysgeusia/bad taste. Very rarely, myocardial ischaemia or infarction, cerebrovascular accident. |
