Drug class description :  Macrolides.
Generic Name :  Clarithromycin - infections
Drug description :  Klaricid Tablets: yellow oval f-c tablets with logo. Klaricid Paediatric Suspension: white to off-white granules for suspension. Klaricid IV: powder in vial. Klaricid Sachets: powder in sachet.
Presentation :  Klaricid Tablets: Clarithromycin 250 mg , 500 mg . Klaricid Paediatric Suspension: Clarithromycin 125 mg per 5 mL, 250mg per 5mL. Klaricid IV: Clarithromycin 500 mg . Klaricid Sachets: Clarithromycin 250 mg .
Indications :  Treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms. include lower respiratory tract infections (eg, acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia); upper respiratory tract infections (eg, sinusitis and pharyngitis); community acquired respiratory infections; skin and skin structure infections; acute otitis media. Klaricid is usually active against the following organisms in vitro: Gram-positive bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus (methicillin susceptible); Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A beta-haemolytic streptococci); alpha-haemolytic streptococci (viridans group); Streptococcus (Diplococcus) pneumoniae; Streptococcus agalactiae; Listeria monocytogenes. Gram-negative bacteria: Haemophilus influenzae; Haemophilus parainfluenzae; Moraxella (Branhamella) gonorrhoeae; Legionella pneumophilia; Bordatella pertussis; Helicobacter pylori; Campylobacter jejuni. Also, mycoplasma (Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Ureaplasma urealyticum); other organisms (Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycobacterium avium, Mycobacterium leprae); anaerobes (Macrolide-susceptible Bacteroides fragilis, Clostridium perfringens, Peptococcus species, Peptostreptococcus species, Propionibacterium acnes).
Adult Dosage :  Klaricid Tablets and Klaricid Sachets: 250 mg twice daily for 7 days. Severe infections, 500 mg twice daily for up to 14 days. Klaricid IV: 1 g daily, by intravenous infusion in two divided doses for two to five days.
Child Dosage :  Klaricid Tablets and Klaricid Sachets: Use paediatric suspension. Klaricid Paediatric Suspension: Under 1 year, 7.5 mg/kg; 1 - 2 years, 2.5 mL; 3 - 6 years, 5 mL; 7 - 9 years, 7.5 mL; 10 - 12 years, 10 mL. All twice daily. Klaricid IV: Not recommended.
Contra Indications :  Known hypersensitivity to macrolide antibiotics. Concomitant administration with ergot derivatives, cisapride, pimozide or terfenadine.
Special Precautions :  Renal or hepatic impairment. Pregnancy, lactation.
Interactions :  Cisapride, pimozide, terfenadine, ergot derivatives, theophylline, oral anticoagulants, digoxin, carbamazepine, astemizole, drugs metabolised by P450, ritonavir, statins.
Adverse Reactions :  GI upset, paraesthesia, stomatitis, glossitis, oral monilia, tongue and tooth discolouration, headache, arthralgia, myalgia, rash, transient CNS effects, allergic reactions, hepatic dysfunction, pseudomembranous colitis, hypoglycaemia, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, renal dysfunction, QT prolongation.
