Drug details for : KEPPRA
 
Drug class description :  Pyrrolidone derivatives (anti- epileptics /anticonvulsants).
Generic Name :  Levetiracetam
Drug description :  250mg, blue, oblong tablets marked with "ucb 250" on one side; 500mg, yellow, oblong tablets marked with "ucb 500" on one side; white, oblong tablets marked with "ucb 1000" on one side. All film-coated tablets.
Presentation :  Tablets, levetiracetam 250mg , 500mg , 1000mg .
Indications :  Indicated as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial onset seizures with or without secondary generalisation in patients with epilepsy.
Adult Dosage :  Initially, 500mg twice daily. Depending on clinical response and tolerance, daily dose can be increased up to 1,500mg twice daily. Dose changes can be made in 500mg twice daily increments or decrements every two to four weeks. Tablets can be taken with or without food.
Child Dosage :  Under 16 years, not recommended; Under 16 years, not recommended; over 16 years, as for adults.
Contra Indications :  Hypersensitivity to levetiracetam or other pyrrolidone derivatives or any of the excipients. Lactation.
Special Precautions :  Withdrawal of therapy should be gradual. Renal impairment - dose should be adjusted according to the degree of impairment (refer to Summary of Product Characteristics). Severe hepatic impairment. Pregnancy.
Interactions :  Refer to Summary of Product Characteristics.
Adverse Reactions :  Most commonly, somnolence, asthenia, dizziness. Also, accidental injury, headache, anorexia, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, nausea, amnesia, ataxia, convulsion, depression, emotional lability, hostility, insomnia, nervousness, tremor, vertigo, rash, diplopia.
