| Generic Name : | Iron-sorbitol |
| Drug description : | Dark brown liquid for injection in ampoules. |
| Presentation : | Injection, iron-sorbitol (equivalent to 50mg Fe per mL). |
| Indications : | For the treatment of iron- deficiency anaemia and the rapid replacement of iron stores. |
| Adult Dosage : | 1.5 mg/kg intramuscularly as single daily dose; maximum 100 mg per injection per day. Number of doses determined by haemoglobin level; see Summary of Product Characteristics. Discontinue oral iron 24 hours before use. |
| Child Dosage : | Under 3 kg (7lb), not recommended; over 3 kg, same as adult. |
| Elderly Dosage : | By intramuscular injection on alternate days. |
| Contra Indications : | Acute renal disorders, hepatic insufficiency. Ineffective in aplastic or hypoplastic anaemias and acute leukaemia. Untreated UTI, early pregnancy. Known UTI, early pregnancy. Known hypersensitivity to iron or Jectofer. Intravenous use. |
| Special Precautions : | Asthma, history of allergies, iron storage diseases, haemoglobinopathies. Elderly, underweight or debilitated patients. Should not be used to treat anaemias other than iron- deficiency anaemia. |
| Interactions : | Chloramphenicol. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Injection site reactions, transient metallic taste or loss of taste, headache, GI upset, dizziness, flushing, haematuria, myalgia, urticaria, hypotension, increased sweating, circulatory collapse, cardiac arrhythmias, palpitations, pressure sensations in chest. Very rarely, anaphylaxis. |
