| Generic Name : | Etonogestrel |
| Drug description : | Non-biodegradable white to off- white flexible rod for subdermal use. |
| Presentation : | Subdermal implant, etonogestrel 68mg. Release rate is 60 - 70 microgram per day in week five to six and has decreased to approximately 35 - 45 microgram per day at the end of the first year, to approximately 30 - 40 microgram per day at the end of the second year and to approximately 25 - 30 microgram per day at the end of the third year. |
| Indications : | Long-term reversible contraception. (Safety and efficacy have been established in women between 18 and 40 years of age.) |
| Adult Dosage : | Over 18 years and under 40 years: one implant is inserted subdermally. Maximum duration of use per implant, three years. For insertion and removal techniques refer to the product information. | Child Dosage : | Not recommended. |
| Contra Indications : | Active venous thromboembolic disorder. Progestogen-dependent tumours. Presence or history of severe hepatic disease as long as liver function values have not returned to normal. Known or suspected pregnancy. Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding. Hypersensitivity to any of the components of Implanon. |
| Special Precautions : | In women being treated with enzyme-inducing drugs it is recommended to advise the additional temporary use of a barrier method or prescribe another non-hormonal contraceptive method. Remove implant in the event of a thrombosis. Long-term immobilisation - consider removal. History of thromboembolic disorders. Diabetes. Tendency to chloasma. Earlier replacement of implant may be required in heavier women. If amenorrhoea or abdominal pain occur, consider ectopic pregnancy. History during pregnancy or previous use of sex steroids of jaundice, pruritus related to cholestasis, gallstones, porphyria, SLE, haemolytic uraemic syndrome, Sydenham's chorea, herpes gestationis, otosclerosis. Monitor blood pressure. Lactation. |
| Interactions : | Hydantoins, barbituarates, primidone, carbamazepine, rifampicin, rifabutin, enzyme- inducing drugs. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Acne, headache, increase in body weight, breast tenderness and pain. Less frequently, alopecia, depressive moods, emotional lability, changes in libido, abdominal pain, dysmenorrhoea. Rarely, rise in blood pressure. Insertion or removal may cause some bruising, slight local Occasionally a scar will be |
