| Drug description : | Inderal Tablets: pink f-c tablets marked with tablet name and strength. Inderal Injection: ampoules. |
| Presentation : | Inderal Tablets: Propranolol hydrochloride 10mg , 40mg , 80mg . Inderal Injection: Propranolol hydrochloride 1mg/mL. |
| Indications : | Prevention of myocardial reinfarction. Cardiac arrhythmias; hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. |
| Adult Dosage : | Reinfarction, 40 mg four times daily for two or three days starting 5 to 21 days after infarction, then 80 mg twice daily. Arrhythmias or cardiomyopathy, 10 - 40 mg three or four times daily. |
| Child Dosage : | Arrhythmias, 0 .25 - 0 .5 mg/kg body-weight three or four times daily. |
| Contra Indications : | 2nd or 3rd degree AV block, sinus bradycardia, sick sinus syndrome, after prolonged fasting, severe uncompensated cardiac failure, cardiogenic shock, hypotension, untreated phaeochromocytoma. Generally contra-indicated in patients with obstructive airways disease or a history of bronchospasm. Known hypersensitivity. Prinzmetal's angina. Metabolic acidosis. |
| Special Precautions : | Poor cardiac reserve should be controlled with digitalis and diuretics. First degree AV block, portal hypertension. Diabetes; metabolic acidosis. Asthenic symptoms. Cerebrovascular insufficiency. Renal or hepatic impairment, thyrotoxicosis. General anaesthesia; consider withdrawal before elective surgery. Pregnancy, lactation. Withdraw gradually. |
| Interactions : | Clonidine withdrawal, verapamil, diltiazem, class II calcium antagonists, class I antiarrhythmics, cardiac depressant anaesthetics, hypoglycaemics, reserpine, other antihypertensives, ergot alkaloids, cimetidine, rifampicin, theophylline, warfarin, CNS depressants, sympathomimetics, indometacin (indomethacin), ibuprofen, chlorpromazine. Refer to Summary of Product Characteristics. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Cold extremities, sleep disturbances, bradycardia, bronchospasm, heart failure deterioration, postural hypotension, GI upset, alopecia, precipitation of heart block, exacerbation of intermittent claudication, Raynaud's phenomenon, confusion, dizziness, mood changes, nightmares, psychoses and hallucinations, purpura, thrombocytopenia, dry eyes, psoriasiform skin reactions, exacerbation of psoriasis, skin rashes, paraesthesia, visual disturbances, fatigue and/or lassitude, increase in antinuclear antibodies. |
