| Generic Name : | Sumatriptan |
| Drug description : | Imigran Subject: pre-filled syringes plus autoinjector. Imigran Tablets: pink or white elongated f-c tablets marked with tablet name and strength. Imigran Nasal Spray: single dose nasal spray. |
| Presentation : | Imigran Subject: Sumatriptan (as succinate) 6mg per 0.5mL. Imigran Tablet: Sumatriptan (as succinate) 50 mg , 100 mg . Imigran Nasal Spray: Sumatriptan 20mg per 0.1mL. |
| Indications : | Imigran Subject: Acute treatment of migraine, with or without aura, or cluster headaches, only where there is a clear diagnosis. Imigran Tablets and Imigran Nasal Spray: Acute migraine attacks, with or without aura, only where there is a clear diagnosis. |
| Adult Dosage : | Imigran Subject: 6 mg by subcutaneous injection soon after onset of attack. If migraine recurs in patients who respond, repeat after minimum 1 hour. Maximum 12 mg in 24 hours. Imigran Tablets: 50 - 100 mg soon after onset of attack. If migraine recurs in patients who respond, repeat dose. Dose should not exceed 300 mg in 24 hours. Patients who fail to respond initially should not receive a second dose for same attack. Imigran Nasal Spray: Over 18 years, 1 spray into one nostril soon after onset of attack. If migraine recurs in dose may be given at an interval of at least 2 hours. Dose should not exceed 2 x 20 mg in 24 hours. Patients who fail to respond initially should not receive a second dose for same attack. |
| Child Dosage : | Not recommended in patients under 18. |
| Elderly Dosage : | Experience in the use of Imigran in patients over 65 years is limited. Use in the over 65s is not recommended. |
| Contra Indications : | Ischaemic heart disease, previous myocardial infarction, Prinzmetal's angina, uncontrolled hypertension, coronary vasospasm. |
| Special Precautions : | Cardiac disease, risk factors of coronary artery disease; assess patients before initiating therapy. History of epilepsy or brain lesions, hepatic or renal impairment. Sensitivity to sulphonamides. Pregnancy, lactation. Driving or operating machinery. |
| Interactions : | MAOIs, 5-HT re-uptake inhibitors, lithium, ergotamine. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Pain, sensation of heaviness or pressure, fatigue, dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, increases in BP. Minor disturbances of liver function tests. Rarely, seizures, hypotension, bradycardia, serious coronary events. Hypersensitivity reactions. Pain at inj. site. Transient bitter taste with spray. If angina-like symptoms (transient chest pain or throat symptoms) occur, withdraw treatment and investigate cause immediately. |
