| Drug description : | Inderal LA: 160 mg lavender/pink sustained-release capsules marked INDERAL LA. Half-Inderal LA: 80 mg lavender/ pink sustained-release capsules marked HALF-INDERAL LA. Inderal Tablets: pink f-c tablets marked with tablet name and strength. |
| Presentation : | Inderal LA: Propranolol hydrochloride 160mg . Half-Inderal LA: Propranolol hydrochloride 80mg . Inderal Tablets: Propranolol hydrochloride 10 mg , 40 mg , 80 mg . |
| Indications : | Inderal LA and Half-Inderal LA: Hypertension. Adjunct in thyrotoxicosis. Inderal Tablets: As above and phaeochromocytoma. |
| Adult Dosage : | Inderal LA and Half-Inderal LA: Hypertension, 160 mg daily increasing if necessary in 80 mg increments until adequate response is achieved. Thyrotoxicosis, 80 mg or 160 mg daily; maximum 240 mg daily. Inderal Tablets: Hypertension, initially 80 mg twice daily increasing if necessary at weekly intervals to 160 - 320 mg daily. Phaeochromocytoma, 60 mg daily with an a-blocker for 3 days preoperatively or 30 mg daily in inoperable cases. Thyrotoxicosis, 10-40mg three to four times daily. |
| Child Dosage : | Inderal LA and Half-Inderal LA: Not recommended. Inderal Tablets: Phaeochromocytoma, thyrotoxicosis, 0.25 - 0.5 mg/kg body-weight three or four times daily. |
| Contra Indications : | 2nd or 3rd degree AV block, sinus bradycardia, sick sinus syndrome, peripheral arterial disease, uncompensated cardiac failure, cardiogenic shock, hypotension, untreated phaechromocytoma. Generally contra-indicated in patients with obstructive airways disease or a history of bronchospasm. Known hypersensitivity. Prinzmetal's angina. Metabolic acidosis. |
| Special Precautions : | Poor cardiac reserve should be controlled with digitalis and diuretics. First degree AV block, portal hypertension. Diabetes; metabolic acidosis. Asthenic symptoms. Cerebrovascular insufficiency. Renal or hepatic impairment, thyrotoxicosis. General anaesthesia; consider withdrawal before elective surgery. Pregnancy, lactation. Withdraw gradually. |
| Interactions : | Clonidine withdrawal, verapamil, diltiazem, class II calcium antagonists, class I antiarrhythmics, cardiac depressant anaesthetics, hypoglycaemics, reserpine, other antihypertensives, ergot alkaloids, cimetidine, warfarin, CNS depressants, sympathominetics, indometacin (indomethacin), ibuprofen, chlorpromazine. Refer to Summary of Product Characteristics. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Cold extremities, sleep disturbances, bradycardia, bronchospasm, heart failure deterioration, postural hypotension, GI upset, alopecia, precipitation of heart block, exacerbation of intermittent claudication, Raynaud's phenomenon, confusion, dizziness, mood changes, nightmares, psychoses and hallucinations, purpura, thrombocytopenia, dry eyes, psoriasiform skin reactions, exacerbation of psoriasis, skin rashes, paraesthesia, visual disturbances, fatigue and/or lassitude, increase in antinuclear antibodies. |
