| Generic Name : | Estropipate |
| Drug description : | Peach elongated scored tablets marked U and 3773. |
| Presentation : | Tablets, estropipate 1.5 mg (equivalent to 0.93 mg estrone [oestrone]). |
| Indications : | HRT for menopausal symptoms. Prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis. |
| Adult Dosage : | 1 - 2 daily continuously. In 1 - 2 daily continuously. In women with an intact uterus add a progestogen for last 10 - 13 days of each 28 day cycle. |
| Child Dosage : | Not applicable. |
| Contra Indications : | Known or suspected pregnancy; cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disorders, eg, thrombophlebitis, moderate to severe hypertension, hyperlipoproteinaemia, or a history of these conditions; known or supected oestrogen- dependent tumours; endometrial hyperplasia, uterine fibromyomata, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding; severe liver disease including Dubin-Johnson and Rotor syndromes; porphyria; active deep vein thrombosis, thromboembolic disorders, or a history of confirmed venous thromboembolism; known or suspected breast cancer. |
| Special Precautions : | History or increased risk of thromboembolic disorders. Mild chronic liver disease; monitor liver function every 8 to 12 weeks. Closely monitor patients with cholelithiasis, otosclerosis, migraine, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, diabetes, hypertension, uterine fibroids, tetany. Examine blood pressure, pelvic organs and breasts (particularly those with fibrocystic disease of the breast or a family history of breast cancer) before and regularly during treatment. If breakthrough bleeding is persistent, perform endometrial assessment, which may include biopsy. Small or moderate increase in probability of having breast cancer - refer to Summary of Product Characteristics. |
| Interactions : | Liver enzyme inducing drugs. |
| Adverse Reactions : | GI upset, nausea, vomiting, weight gain, breast tenderness and enlargement, breakthrough bleeding, headache, dizziness, impaired liver function, cholestatic jaundice, epistaxis, migraine, thromboembolic disorders, exacerbation of varicose veins, increased blood generalised pruritus. REASONS FOR IMMEDIATE DISCONTINUATION OF TREATMENT: Occurence of migraine-type headaches for the first time, frequent severe headaches, acute visual disturbances, signs of thrombophlebitis or thromboembolism, or any other possible prodromal symptoms of vascular occlusion. Rise in blood pressure. Jaundice. Pregnancy. Discontinue four weeks before major elective surgery and during immobilisation entailing risk of thrombosis. |
