Drug class description :  Butyrophenones (antipsychotics).
Generic Name :  Haloperidol
Drug description :  Haldol Tablets: 5 mg blue quarter-scored tablets marked Janssen; 10 mg yellow scored tablets marked Janssen and H10. Haldol Oral Liquid: liquid. Haldol Injection: ampoules. Haldol Decanoate: 1 mL ampoules.
Presentation :  Haldol Tablets: Haloperidol 5mg , 10mg . Haldol Oral Liquid: Haloperidol 2mg/mL. Haldol Injection: Haloperidol 5mg/mL. Haldol Decanoate: Haloperidol (as decanoate) 50 mg/mL , 100 mg/mL .
Indications :  Haldol Tablets: Schizophrenia, psychosis, mania, hypomania, behavioural disorders, adjunct to short term management of moderate to severe psychomotor agitation, excitement, dangerously impulsive behaviour, intractable hiccup, restlessness and agitation in the elderly, Gilles de Tourette syndrome, severe tics. Haldol Injection: As above plus nausea and vomiting. Haldol Decanoate: Long-term maintenance in schizophrenia, psychoses, mental or behavioural problems.
Adult Dosage :  Haldol Tablets and Haldol Oral Liquid: Initially 1 .5 - 3 mg two or three times daily. Severe or resistant cases, 3 - 5mg two or three times daily, increasing gradually as required; maximum 30mg daily. When control is achieved reduce to maintenance dose. Haldol Injection: Psychoses, initially 2 - 10 mg intramuscularly. Repeat 4 - 8 hourly; maximum 18 mg daily. intramuscularly. Haldol Decanoate: Titrate dose according to severity and response. Usually in the range 50 mg - 300 mg by deep intramuscular injection every 4 weeks.
Child Dosage :  Haldol Tablets and Haldol Oral Liquid: 0.025 - 0.05 mg/kg daily in two divided doses; maximum 10 mg daily. Haldol injection: Not recommended. Haldol Decanoate: Not recommended.
Elderly Dosage :  Haldol Decanoate: Initially 12.5 - 25 mg every 4 weeks. Titrate according to response.
Contra Indications :  Comatose states, CNS depression, Parkinson's disease, lesions of the basal ganglia.
Special Precautions :  Liver or renal failure, epilepsy, disturbed thyroid function, phaeochromocytoma, severe cardiovascular disease, hypokalaemia, prolonged Q-T interval. Pregnancy, lactation.
Interactions :  CNS depressants, alcohol, analgesics, antihypertensives, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, antidiabetics, levodopa.
Adverse Reactions :  Acute dystonias (spasms of eye, face, neck and back muscles), akathisia (motor restlessness), parkinsonism-like syndrome (rigidity and tremor), and tardive dyskinesia, dry mouth, nasal stuffiness, difficulty in micturition, tachycardia, constipation, blurring of vision, hypotension, weight gain, impotence, galactorrhoea, hypothermia (a problem in the elderly), gynaecomastia, amenorrhoea, benign obstructive jaundice, blood dyscrasias and dermatitis, ECG irregularities, drowsiness, lethargy, fatigue, epileptiform seizures.
