| Indications : | Schizophrenia, psychosis, mania, hypomania, behavioural disorders, adjunct to short term management of moderate to severe psychomotor agitation, excitemnt, dangerously impulsive behaviour, intractable hiccup, restlessness and agitation in the elderly, Gilles de Tourette syndrome, severe tics. |
| Adult Dosage : | Initially, 1.5-3mg two or three times daily, increasing gradually as required to a maximum daily dose of 120mg. Dose should be lowered to a maintenance level once initial control is achieved. |
| Contra Indications : | Comatose states, CNS depression, Parkinson's disease, lesions of the basal ganglia. |
| Special Precautions : | Liver or renal failure, epilepsy, phaeochromocytoma, severe cardiovascular disease, hypokalaemia, prolonged QT interval. Pregnancy, lactation. |
| Interactions : | CNS depressants, alcohol, analgesics, antihypertensives, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, antidiabetics, levodopa. |
| Adverse Reactions : | Acute dystonias (spasms of eye, face, neck and back muscles), akathisia (motor restlessness), parkinsonism-like syndrome (rigidity and tremor), and tardive dyskinesia, dry mouth, nasal stuffiness, difficulty in micturition, tachycardia, constipation, blurring of vision, hypotension, weight gain, impotence, galactorrhoea, hypothermia (a problem in the elderly), gynaecomastia, amenorrhoea, benign obstructive jaundice, blood dyscrasias and dermatitis, ECG irregularities, drowsiness, lethargy, fatigue, epileptiform seizures. |
