Medicine information : Homatropine
 
Drug class description :  Antimuscarinics.
Generic Name :  Generic
Drug description :  Eye drops.
Presentation :  Eye Drops, homatropine 1% w/v , 2% w/v .
Indications :  Mydriasis (used in opthalmology in the determination of refraction). Treatment of uveitis.
Adult Dosage :  Refraction: One or two drops to be instilled, repeated after 5 or 10 minutes if necessary. Uveitis: One or two drops, 2 or 3 times daily or as directed by the physician.
Child Dosage :  Not recommended in children under six years.
Elderly Dosage :  Use with caution.
Contra Indications :  Closed angle glaucoma. Patients with a narrow angle between the iris and the cornea. Known hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation or to atropine.
Special Precautions :  Soft contact lenses must not be worn during the period of use. worn during the period of use. May temporarily impair vision. Fever. Use with caution in patients with myocardial infarction and in patients with conditions characterised by tachycardia, such as thyrotoxicosis and cardiac insufficiency. A darkly pigmented iris is more resistant to pupillary dilation and caution should be exercised to avoid overdosage. Response to the eye drops may be less satisfactory in children because of their strong accommodative reserve. Pregnancy and lactation.
Adverse Reactions :  Contact dermatitis. Systemic toxicity may occur: possible side effects include, dryness of the mouth with difficulty in swallowing and talking, thirst, flushing and dryness of the skin, transient followed by bradycardia, with palpitations and arrhythmias, urinary urgency and reduction in the tone and motility of the gastrointestinal tract leading to constipation. Restlessness, confusion, hallucinations delirium and excitement may also occur.
