Medicine information : HIVID (HIV)
 
Drug class description :  Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs).
Generic Name :  Zalcitabine
Drug description :  Beige or grey oval f-c tablets marked with name, strength and Roche.
Presentation :  Tablets, zalcitabine 0.375 mg, 0.75 mg.
Indications :  In combination with other antiretroviral agents in HIV infection.
Adult Dosage :  0.75 mg every 8 hours.
Child Dosage :  Not recommended.
Contra Indications :  Peripheral neuropathy.
Special Precautions :  Patients at risk of developing peripheral neuropathy or pancreatitis, or with low CD4 count; monitor haematology, biochemistry and serum amylase. Renal or hepatic impairment, history of alcohol abuse, heart failure. Pregnancy, lactation.
Interactions :  Drugs likely to cause peripheral neuropathy, didanosine, amphotericin, foscarnet, aminoglycosides, i.v. pentamidine.
Adverse Reactions :  Peripheral neuropathy, pancreatitis, GI disorders, rash, pruritus, sweats. Rarely, lactic acidosis in absence of hypoxaemia, severe hepatomegaly with steatosis, hepatic failure, oesophageal ulcers, anaphylaxis.
