Drug class description :  Progestogens.
Generic Name :  Etynodiol [ethynodiol]
Drug description :  White tablets marked with maker's name.
Presentation :  Tablets, etynodiol diacetate 500 microgram s.
Indications :  Oral contraception.
Adult Dosage :  Starting on 1st day of cycle, 1 at same time daily without a break.
Contra Indications :  History of severe arterial disease, ischaemic heart disease, previous thrombotic stroke. Liver adenoma. Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding. Pregnancy. Recent trophoblastic disease. Previous ectopic pregnancy.
Special Precautions :  Hypertension, presence or history of thromboembolic disorders. Hormone dependent carcinoma. Liver dysfunction. Functional ovarian cysts. Focal migraine. Examine blood pressure, pelvic organs and breasts before and regularly during treatment.
Interactions :  Barbiturates, phenytoin, primidone, carbamazepine, chloral hydrate, dichloralphenazone, ethosuximide, rifampicin, glutethimide, chlorpromazine, meprobamate, griseofulvin.
Adverse Reactions :  Irregular menstrual bleeding. Breast discomfort. Acne. Functional ovarian cysts. Headache. REASONS FOR IMMEDIATE DISCONTINUATION OF TREATMENT: First signs of thrombophlebitis or thromboembolism. Jaundice. Pregnancy. They need NOT be withdrawn prior to, or following elective surgery.
