Drug class description :  Sulphonamides / diaminopyrimidines (antimalarials).
Generic Name :  Sulfadoxine, pyrimethamine
Drug description :  White quarter-scored tablets marked ROCHE with hexagon.
Presentation :  Tablets, sulfadoxine 500mg, pyrimethamine 25mg.
Indications :  Indicated for the treatment of Plasmodium falciparum malaria and in restricted circumstances can be used for the prophylaxis can be used for the prophylaxis of Plasmodium falciparum malaria.
Adult Dosage :  Treatment, over 14 years, 2 - 3 tablets as a single dose. Prophylaxis, over 14 years, 1 weekly. Refer to Summary of Product Characteristics.
Child Dosage :  Treatment, given as a single dose: under 2 years (5-10kg), half a tablet; 2 - 5 years (>10- 20kg), one tablet; 5 - 10 years (>20-30kg), one and a half tablets; 10 - 14 years (>30-45kg) , two tablets. Prophylaxis, given once every seven days: under 2 years (5- 10kg), quarter of a tablet; 2 - 10 years (>10-30kg), half a tablet; 10 - 14 years (>30-45kg), three quarters of a tablet. Refer to Summary of Product Characteristics.
Contra Indications :  Sulphonamide sensitivity. Severe liver or kidney dysfunction. Blood dyscrasias. Neonates, pregnancy, lactation.
Special Precautions :  Perform regular blood counts during long-term prophylaxis. Avoid excess sun.
Interactions :  Folate inhibitors.
Adverse Reactions :  Skin rash, pharyngitis or pruritus (discontinue immediately). GI distress, blood dyscrasias. Rarely erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Lyell's syndrome.
