Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is characterised by a gradual and permanent loss of kidney function that worsens as it progresses from stages 1 to 5. One of the most common complications of CKD is anaemia. Drug class description :  Oxicams (non-steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs, NSAIDs).
Generic Name :  Piroxicam
Drug description :  Feldene Capsules: 10 mg maroon/ blue capsule; 20 mg maroon capsule. Both marked Pfizer and FEL 10 or FEL 20, respectively. Feldene Dispersible: 10mg white, round, scored tablet marked Pfizer and FEL 10; 20 mg white oblong tablet marked PFIZER and FEL 20. Feldene Suppositories: suppositories. Feldene Melt: off-white fast dissolving tablet. Feldene I.M. Injection: solution in ampoule.
Presentation :  Feldene Capsules: Piroxicam 10mg , 20mg . Feldene Dispersible: Piroxicam 10 mg , 20mg . Feldene Suppositories: Piroxicam 20 mg . Feldene Melt: Piroxicam 20 mg . Feldene I.M. Injection: Piroxicam 20mg per mL.
Indications :  Feldene Capsules, dispersible, suppositories and melt: Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthrosis, ankylosing spondylitis, acute musculo- skeletal disorders, acute gout, pain following orthopaedic, dental and other minor surgery. Feldene dispersible: juvenile chronic arthritis. Feldene IM: Initial treatment of acute conditions and acute exacerbations of chronic conditions. Pain following orthopaedic, dental and other minor surgery.
Adult Dosage :  Feldene Capsules, dispersible, suppositories and melt: Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, 20 mg daily as a single dose; can increase this dose by 10mg if necessary. Acute musculo-skeletal disorders, initially 40 mg daily for 2 days then 20 mg daily for 5 - 12 days. Gout, initially 40 mg as a single dose then 40 mg daily in single or divided doses for next 4 - 6 days. Dispersible tabs. may be swallowed whole or dispersed in 50 mL water; Melt tablets should be dissolved on the tongue. Feldene I.M. Injection: Same as oral dose by deep i.m. inj. into upper, outer quadrant of buttocks. Maintenance, use oral preps.
Child Dosage :  Feldene Capsules, dispersible, suppositories and melt: Over 6 years, JCA only; under 15 kg, 5 mg; 16 - 25 kg, 10 mg; 26 - 45kg, 15mg; over 46kg, 20mg. All daily using dispersible tabs. Feldene I.M. Injection: Not recommended.
Contra Indications :  Aspirin/anti-inflammatory induced allergy. Active peptic ulcer, Recent proctitis (suppositories only).
Special Precautions :  Patients with a history of upper GI disease. Therapy to be withdrawn if bleeding occurs. Renal or hepatic impairment, monitor on long term therapy; heart failure; elderly. Pregnancy, lactation. Phenylketonuria (Feldene Melt only).
Interactions :  Anticoagulants, other NSAIDs, hypoglycaemics, lithium.
Adverse Reactions :  GI disturbances, skin reactions, injection site reactions, oedema, CNS effects, malaise, tinnitus.
